Background

What is an ACS code?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) are the FAA's official set of standards applicants are held to on knowledge and practical tests. When you miss a question, the associated ACS code appears on your AKTR.

1st

Applicable ACS

Which certificate or rating standard applies — e.g. PA for Private Pilot Airplane.

2nd

Area of operation

The broad phase or category of operation being tested.

3rd

Task area

A specific task within that area of operation.

4th

Specific element

Knowledge (K), Risk Management (R), or Skill (S) — the exact element tested.

PA.I.D.K5
  1. PA. Private Pilot – Airplane
  2. I. Preflight Preparation
  3. D. Cross-Country Flight Planning
  4. K5. Procedures for activating and closing a VFR flight plan

The FAA is phasing out the older Learning Statement (PLT) codes that used to appear on AKTRs, in favor of ACS codes — but some reports still show them. Our decoder above handles both. You can also reference the FAA's own Learning Code Reference Guide.
